A possible armed boarding of a tanker has been reported off the coast of Somalia, raising renewed concerns about piracy activity in the region.

According to a security alert issued by Diaplous Group, the incident occurred on April 21 at around 12:00 UTC, approximately 24 nautical miles southeast of Xaafuun (Hafun). Initial reports indicate that armed individuals may have boarded an oil products tanker, though authorities have not yet confirmed the vessel’s identity, crew status or outcome of the incident.

The alert also highlights a separate but closely related incident in the same area. On the previous day, eleven armed individuals reportedly boarded and took control of a Somali-flagged fishing vessel near Xaafuun.

The proximity in time and location of the two events suggests a coordinated or at least localized piracy threat. Security analysts note that the pattern is consistent with activity by organized Pirate Action Groups historically active along Somalia’s northeastern coastline.

While attribution remains unconfirmed, the nature of the incidents – involving close-range boarding rather than stand-off attacks – aligns more closely with traditional piracy tactics than with state-linked operations.

The absence of an official report from United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations does not diminish the credibility of the threat, according to maritime security sources. Vessel operators in the region are being advised to treat the situation as operationally significant.

Recent data from the International Maritime Bureau indicates that Somali piracy, while reduced compared to previous peaks, has not disappeared. Two incidents were recorded in the first quarter of 2026, including one hijacking.

Ships operating near Xaafuun are advised to implement enhanced security measures in line with BMP MS 2025 guidance. These include heightened watchkeeping, restricted deck access, readiness of citadels, and immediate reporting of suspicious activity.

Maritime security experts also recommend avoiding unnecessary loitering in the area, maintaining safe distances from unidentified small craft, and coordinating closely with naval and reporting authorities.

The situation remains under close monitoring, with further updates expected as more verified information becomes available.
