Eyesea and EVI Safety Technologies have launched an AI system to detect and report containers that fall overboard. The technology uses standard ship cameras, as reported by Splash 247. After testing in simulations, it is now ready for trials on real vessels.

The system uses computer vision and machine learning. It watches deck and bridge cameras to spot containers falling into the water or drifting nearby. Once a container is detected, the system sends alerts with details like location, number of containers, and cargo information. Alerts go to shipowners, flag states, and coastal authorities if needed.

This technology helps crews comply with new IMO rules. The rules require immediate reporting of lost containers, especially hazardous ones. The Eyesea–EVI system provides geo-tagged images and structured data, making reports faster and more accurate.

Vladimir Ponomarfev, CEO of EVI Safety Technologies, said: “Using AI to solve a long-standing safety and environmental problem in shipping is very exciting.”

Real-time detection also addresses a common issue. Many container-loss events go unnoticed or are reported too late. With this system, ships can react faster. Accidents can be prevented and safety at sea improved. Container losses remain frequent. Two incidents were recorded in the past two weeks alone. This shows the urgent need for better monitoring solutions.
