UK-based shipping venture LomarLabs is partnering with Ireland’s Advanced Wing Systems to launch a containerised, automated wind propulsion solution for merchant ships. The system adapts Advanced Wing Systems’ semi-rigid wing sails, known for powering yachts and America’s Cup campaigns, into a modular setup that fits inside a standard 40-foot container.

Unlike traditional wind-assist technologies, which require heavy retrofits and dry dock installation, the new solution allows sails to be deployed, optimised using artificial intelligence for prevailing wind conditions, and retracted when not in use, ensuring smooth port operations.

Shipowners can lease the containerised wing sails, testing wind propulsion without taking vessels out of trading or committing to costly permanent modifications. The approach combines operational flexibility with fuel savings, offering a practical, commercially viable step toward decarbonisation.

Advanced Wing Systems highlighted that containerisation allows shipowners to trial wind propulsion without capital risk or operational disruption. LomarLabs noted that the solution demonstrates how decarbonisation can be achieved in ways that are both commercially viable and beneficial for shipowners and charterers, providing a tangible return on investment through fuel efficiency.
