Lloyd’s Register has released new guidance on nuclear-powered shipping, marking the first comprehensive roadmap for integrating nuclear technology into commercial maritime operations. The document, published in London in October 2025, provides a structured approach to regulatory, safety, technical, and financial aspects of using nuclear power at sea.

Developed with Global Nuclear Security Partners (GNSP) and marine insurer NorthStandard, the guidance outlines how small modular reactors (SMRs) could be safely deployed on ships and offshore units. It details practical steps for project teams, from design and safety classification to insurance, liability, and emergency preparedness.

The document highlights the absence of an international regulatory framework and urges collaboration between key organizations such as the IMO and IAEA to harmonize nuclear and maritime standards. It also addresses cyber and physical security, environmental impact, and the development of a robust nuclear safety case.

The guidance builds on Lloyd’s Register’s earlier “Fuel for Thought: Nuclear” research and fills a critical knowledge gap as the shipping industry seeks reliable, zero-emission energy solutions.
