Finnish wind propulsion technology provider Norsepower has signed a strategic agreement with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Equipment (CHIC) to expand the production and deployment of its rotor sails, targeting growing demand for low-emission shipping solutions.

The cooperation covers serial production, sales, installation, and servicing of Norsepower rotor sails™, as well as joint engineering development. The partnership builds on the company’s dedicated rotor sail factory in Dafeng, China – described as the world’s first facility specializing in this type of technology – alongside its existing production hub in Poland.

By combining Norsepower’s rotor sail systems and control technology with CHIC’s large-scale manufacturing capabilities and global service network, the companies aim to accelerate the rollout of wind-assisted propulsion across commercial fleets.

The move reflects increasing demand from shipowners for solutions that reduce fuel consumption and emissions, as well as a broader industry trend of scaling green maritime technologies through partnerships with Chinese shipyards and manufacturers.

Similar strategies have already been adopted by other players in the sector, as European developers seek to industrialize wind propulsion systems and expand global reach.
