The new river cruise ship Lumière has completed a fully autonomous inland dock-to-dock voyage, which is being reported as the first-ever in shipping. The vessel sailed about six nautical miles on the Merwede River from Hardinxveld-Giessendam to Gorinchem, Netherlands, entirely under autonomous control.
The demonstration tested the ship’s advanced systems, including Retina M-Pilot, Shipping Technology’s ST BRAIN, and Autonomous Lane Assist (ALA). These systems automatically adjust rudder and pod movements, factoring in load, engine RPM, and desired turning acceleration.
Developers reported that the systems performed as intended. The automated docking process allowed the captain to remain fully in control. Even Beaufort 8 crosswinds (34–40 knots) did not affect the ship’s course.
Project managers say the autonomous system enhances inland shipping efficiency. It does not replace captains but supports them with smarter navigation tools. Experienced captains gain more time, while junior crews receive better guidance.
Lumière is owned by Scylla, a German travel company operating over 40 river cruise ships. The 135-meter vessel carries 130 passengers and 50 crew. Next year, it will sail on the Rhône for Tauck, featuring larger cabins and luxurious amenities.
